The Programme

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is offered by the University of Huddersfield in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced & Professional Studies (CAPS) at Caritas Francis Hsu College. The MBA is designed to provide the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs with the highest level of management education and personal development. The programme is suitable for those who have experience in general management and/or in a specialist function and who aspire to a senior management position. It is relevant to people from a wide variety of organisations, large or small, public, private or voluntary.

The University

The University of Huddersfield is a dynamic and expanding institution in the North of England, UK. It has a friendly reputation, an excellent graduate employment record and high levels of student support. Students from over 60 countries worldwide attend Huddersfield. The University has a wide portfolio of academic and vocational programmes for full and part-time students, with a particular emphasis on business and professional studies. The Huddersfield University Business School (HUBS) has developed close working relationships with business and industry through consultancy, training, sponsored projects and research, all of which is fed back into the teaching programmes to ensure relevance and currency. In recent years, the University of Huddersfield has developed a reputation for the delivery of its courses outside the UK particularly in Asia Pacific region. Recent official inspections by the UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education of the University's provision have been very successful.

Professional Recognition

The Huddersfield MBA programme is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute in UK. The Huddersfield MBA students are able to gain professional qualifications from the Chartered Management Institute without the need for additional study or assessment. The programme will prepare students for an application to become a Chartered Manager.

Programme Aims

The Master of Business Administration programme specifically aims to develop the strategic capability of participants. The MBA encourages participants to develop a personal perspective on effective management and equip them for senior management roles. It provides an academically rigorous business and general management education and aims to develop participants' personal, inter-personal and communication skills. Participants will be exposed to the latest management thinking and have opportunities to exchange insights with other managers on the programme.

More specifically, it

  1. provides students with a sound framework of latest management and organisational theory;
  2. provides students with a sound knowledge of the relationships between the functional areas of management and managerial activities at the corporate level, and of the inter-relationships between organisations and their environments;
  3. enhances students' requisite conceptual and analytical abilities to enable them to evaluate business and managerial problems and to generate a range of solutions;
  4. develop students' awareness of current management problems and the key issues facing businesses in the 21st Century, particularly those associated with change, management, internationalisation and global business activity;
  5. helps students to develop a critical approach to the use of current concepts, theories and literature as a means of analyzing and resolving managerial issues;
  6. improves students' personal competence and management potential by developing their requisite personal skills and their abilities to formulate, implement, monitor and evaluate policy and strategy.

Following the taught elements of the course, students will undertake a 15,000-17,000 word dissertation as a major project that enables them to specialise in a management area of their interest.

Module Descriptions

Managing and Developing Activities

The module is designed to provide a practical approach to strategic and operational aspects in organizations relating to continuous improvement and the improvement of performance. Flexibility and responsiveness in managing operations being a key aspect in this subject area. To enable effective management of operational and strategic activities, the content provides the underpinning knowledge of management information systems to assist managers achieve both sound operational and strategic decisions enabling them to deliver any long term aims.


Managerial Environment and Challenges

The module is concerned with the external environment within which organizations operate and their interaction with this environment. In particular the module focuses on the need to identify and understand the key focuses which have influenced the environment in the past and are likely to shape that environment in the future. It is also about the way in which the management process itself is influenced by the external environment.


Innovation and Marketing

The module will address issues of marketing strategy and planning in relation to innovative technologies, products, processes and services.

Attention will be focused on the critical factors in managing technological innovation and new product, process and service development effectively.


Personal and Professional Development

The module provides a firm foundation to continuing Professional Development through a structured approach to managing personal learning. An understanding of processes of self-audit, planning, recording, review and reflection enables participants to identify personal and professional learning needs, develop there through planned activities and relate them to organisational goals.


Managing People

The module aims to provide a firm foundation of the relationship between human resource management and strategic management. Within that it aims to provide an understanding of the key human resource concepts and strategies through a focus on management and the development of people, within that the concepts of leadership, group development and human motivation are considered.


Managing Finance

The module aims to understand the language of accounting and finance, together with the ability to interpret and analyse financial information as a basis for financial decision making and planning.


Global Business Issues

The module explores current ¡¥hot topics¡¦ in the Global Business Arena. Issues such as ethics, entrepreneurship, globalisation, politics and culture may be explored from a number of perspectives. There will be an emphasis on individual choice and experiential learning.


Strategy Agenda

The module aims to explore the nature of strategic thinking and strategic management within a range of organizations and across business networks. The learning programme employs a range of techniques and framework in order to inform strategic choice and implementation.


Management Development

The module explores the evolution and context of Management Development in the UK and overseas. It looks at the strategic development of human resources, leadership, team-working and organisational learning from a number of perspectives with an emphasis on strategic interventions.


Global Management

The module is designed to provide a practical approach to the international and strategic aspects of business. Flexibility and responsiveness in managing global operations will be the key aspect of this module with specific emphasis being placed upon managing professionals globally. The content provides underpinning in cross cultural management theory and it's relevance to the Global Management Process.


International Marketing

The module involves the consideration of the international marketing environment and the application of marketing principles to form appropriate strategies for companies operating in foreign and world markets.


International Business Finance

The module considers the two main roles of the Financial Manager within the enterprise, namely, the ability to meet the firm's finance needs and to ensure that the finance is used in the productive manner. In particular the module considers the additional tasks and problems, which the financial manager will encounter when trading overseas, as either an exporter or a multinational, and the strategies that can be used to overcome these problems.


The Reflective Manager

The module allows experienced and practising managers to reflect upon management issues and practices and their own behaviour in the context of selected theories, concepts and ideas.


Dissertation Proposal

The module provides a firm foundation for the dissertation and to explore issues of design, methodology and achievability in the context of the dissertation. Students will undertake a preliminary literature review to provide focus for the dissertation.


Dissertation

The dissertation is scheduled towards the end of the MBA programme. Candidates will have the opportunity to integrate management related knowledge and research expertise within the dissertation study. The module is designed to encourage the evaluation of taught theory through means of empirical work.

Programme Duration

All MBA students must complete 10 modules plus a 15,000 ¡V 17,000 word dissertation. Students can complete the programme in 26 months.

Mode of Study

The programme is taught by means of three types of classes:

1. Face to Face Lectures

Lecturers from the University visit Hong Kong to conduct face to face classes in a block of 24 hours for each module.

Each set of classes involves Sunday (10am ¡V 5pm), Monday to Friday (6:45pm ¡V 9:45pm) and Saturday (2pm ¡V 5pm) sessions.

2. Tutorials

Local staff will be responsible for the conduction of tutorials, using material provided and approved by the University. Staff from CAPS will also provide administrative and pastoral support to students. 12 hours of tutorial are arranged for each module.

3. Self-Study

For each module, students will be provided with comprehensive self-study guides which will be used alongside a recognized core textbook. This textbook will be provided for all modules.

Assessment and Graduation Requirements

Monitoring of progress and regular feedback is provided through individual and group reports. Other assessment methods include essays, learning logs, in-class tests, examinations as well as a dissertation.

Studentss who successfully complete the assessments of the required modules and a dissertation (180 credits) will be awarded the Master of Business Administration by the University of Huddersfield. The master awarded will be identical to that awarded to on-campus students.

Academic Support and Facilities

Students of the programme will be provided with the following learning support:

  • A prescribed textbook and a University-developed comprehensive study pack will be provided for each module. The study pack consists of the module specification, lecture handouts, tutorial materials, assessment tasks and a list of relevant readings.
  • Access to the electronic library resources of the University.
  • Access to the web-based learning environment, Blackboard, as well as student learning support services, of the University.
  • A collection of the recommended textbooks and references of the course is available at the Caritas Francis Hsu College Caine Road Library for use of students. This is regularly updated to include the most recent relevant publications.
  • Access to library, language centre and computer facilities of Caritas Francis Hsu College.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must normally:

  1. possess an honours degree or equivalent, i.e. Professional qualification, from a British or approved overseas institution; and
  2. have a minimum of two years appropriate management and business experience.

Applicants are expected to meet the English language proficiency requirement of GCSE Grade C, or TOEFL 550, or IELTS 6.0.

Tuition Fees

For students who start in any session in 2008 and 2009, the total tuition fee is HK$98,500. The payment arrangement is as follows:

HK$17,800

payable before two modules (each module is of a two-month duration)

HK$9,500 before the dissertation

Each instalment covers the tuition fees, programme notes, study guides, assignment marking and feedback, degree certification and official transcript.

Tuition fees are subject to an annual review. Students who do not complete their study within 10 consecutive sessions are subject to any fee increase applied to the sessions later on.

Payment of tuition fees is to be made by cheque or money order made payable to ¡§Caritas-Hong Kong¡¨. Fees paid are not transferable. Fees paid will not be refunded unless there is a premature cessation of the programme (a very unlikely case to occur) in which case refund will be made within one month after the commencement of the session.

Application Procedure

The duly completed application form must be submitted together with the following:

  • originals and copies of supporting certificates, diplomas and relevant transcripts, as evidence of academic and professional qualifications obtained, for certification purpose,
  • copy of HKID card or passport,
  • a recent passport-sized photograph; and
  • a non-refundable application fee of HK$200 (payable by cash/ cheque made payable to ¡§Caritas-Hong Kong¡¨)
