HU was formed from the former Polytechnic of Huddersfield in 1992. The Polytechnic of Huddersfield was formed from the former College of Technology of Huddersfield in 1970. The former Huddersfield College of Technology was well recognized for its excellence in Business, Engineering and Logistics. |
In 1970 the College was amongst the first to receive Polytechnic status, wherein its portfolio of undergraduate, post-experience and post-graduate courses rapidly expanded. Its reputation for providing major academic and training initiatives in addition to the enthusiasm of its staff at all levels enabled it to gain the university status in 1992.
| HU continues to build on its fine reputation for providing excellence in its mix and spread of full-time, part-time, and flexible delivery courses and to further expand its well established research and high level consultancy base. It continues its pursuit of excellence in every area. It is quoted in the 1999's Virgin Alternative Guide to British Universities that "Huddersfield University staff are the most enthusiastic in the country". In the late 1998 HU won two nationally recognized HEIST Awards for promotional materials. | ![]() |
Undergraduate courses in business have been offered by the HU for over twenty-five years and there are now some 3,000 students enrolled in the Huddersfield University Business School which is in charge of the BA(Hons)BAM programme.

| The BA(Hons)BAM programme is designed to equip students for the demand of the business, industry, voluntary and service sectors in the 21st Century. The programme is distinctive from ordinary business degrees in that it builds on the functional areas of business by focusing on Management and Leadership. It will be particularly useful for students wishing to retain flexibility in their career choice and who may be more interested in focusing on general management issues rather than choosing a specific functional or specialist area. | ![]() |

Module Descriptions
| Leadership: Process & Organizations | [Top] |
The module is designed to provide students with an understanding of the challenges faced by those involved in leading and renewing organizations in today's increasingly complex and dynamic global operating environment. Students will be introduced to models, theories and research in the areas of leadership, organizations and decision-making. Techniques for analyzing organizations, their structures and inter-relationships will be introduced and developed over the course of the programme of study.
| [Top] |
To meet the aims of the module, several pertinent topics
relating to the human resource in organisations and in society as a whole
will be considered. The initial process of job choice will provide
a base point from which key issues, such as deviance at work and the nature
of professions/dirty/deviant jobs, can be developed. The role of work
in organisations and in society as a whole will also be considered from
various theoretical perspectives. Current issues in the literature will
be critically evaluated - such as the globalisation of work; the relationship
between work and non-work; unemployment; professions/women/management
and the labour process; the future of work.
| Managing Quality and Developing Performance | [Top] |
This module examines the roles and responsibilities
of managers within business operations; exploring the corporate, strategic
and operational approaches relating to quality and associated techniques.
It has a particular focus on employee and operational performance and
its management.
| [Top] |
In order to highlight the role of managers/administrators
in organisations, students need to be aware of the key strategic
management approaches to help them deliver both short and long term aims/goals/objectives
for the organisation and guide it in the right direction.
| Marketing and Management of Innovation | [Top] |
To meet the aims of the module, managing technological innovation and new products will be treated as a strategic issue rather than from the functional viewpoint of managing research and development.
Attention will be focussed on the critical factors in managing technological innovation and new product development effectively.
This module will build on the marketing concepts and
principles taught at foundation level of marketing. It will focus on the
knowledge and skills required for successful marketing of innovations
to consumers and business organisations. Study of innovative marketing
techniques will form an integral part of the module.
| Cross Cultural Studies | [Top] |
This module will consider the influence national culture
has on behaviour and the implications of this for organisational design
and management. It will also consider how orgranisations can prepare
and support managers who will be working in a national cultural setting
which is different to their own.
