Language Enhancement Courses

 

Courses are voluntary modules covering a variety of language related areas. They run for 10 weeks in both First and Second Semesters, and are free of charge. A Language Centre Course Certificate will be awarded to participants with 80% or above attendance. Courses offered currently include English, Putonghua and Japanese.

Course Descriptions

  • Grammar Practice I
     
    The course aims to improve the grammar foundation of the participants. It provides a review of the major parts of speech and follows with grammar practice. Topics include: countable & uncountable nouns; pronouns; subject-verb agreement; articles; prepositions; tenses; modals; gerunds; infinitives; participles; question tags. Participants are encouraged to increase their accuracy in using grammar after the course.
     

  • Grammar Practice II

    The course is designed for participants who have a good foundation with basic grammatical knowledge and expect a better mastery of grammar. Topics include: adjective & adverbs phrases/clauses; relative & participial phrases/clauses; active & passive voice; direct & indirect speech; complex & compound sentences; conditional sentences. Further practice is provided with a focus on improving the accuracy of participants' English grammar.
     

  • English for TOEFL
     
    The course aims at preparing participants for the TOEFL examination. Topics to be covered are: introduction to TOEFL; examination skills; listening comprehension; reading comprehension; vocabulary exercises; revision of English usage. Participants are given past papers for reference.
     

  • English for IELTS

    The course aims at preparing participants for the IELTS examination. Topics to be covered are: introduction to IELTS; examination skills; listening comprehension; reading comprehension; writing practice; speaking practice. Participants are given past papers for reference.
     

  • Social English

    The course aims to help participants in achieving effective oral communication in various social interactions. Topics include: greeting; socializing; describing; asking questions; making requests; explaining; offering help; congratulating & sympathizing; agreeing & disagreeing; persuading & insisting; expressing shock & surprise; making complaints. Role-play, pair-work and group discussion are used to encourage students' participation.
     

  • Vocabulary Workshop

    The course aims to enrich participants' knowledge of English vocabulary. It also aims to improve the style when using the language. Topics include: word formation; prefixes & suffixes; choice of words; confusing words; content words in different situations; correct usage. Vocabulary exercises are used for further practice.

 

  • Writing Workshop

    Writing Workshop is specially designed for students who are weak in writing and are afraid to write. Writing cohesive paragraphs and complete essays are stressed in the course. Practical exercises and advice from the teacher in improving writing are emphasized every lesson.
     

  • Speak Up!

    The course aims to develop and improve oral skills in English. Participants are given a variety of activities and exercises in practicing their speaking skills. Elements of effective communication will be discussed with emphasis on using appropriate expressions in different situations. The course also targets for increasing participants' confidence in an English-speaking environment.
     

  • 普通話班

    這課程旨在教授同學於日常生活中運用到的普通話。透過輕鬆的對話及練習,同學會學習到很多普通話的新穎用及表達方法。此外,課程由來自省級普通話水平測試員,謝春玲老師教授,保證同學得到最純正普通話訓練。
     

  • 日語班

    這課程旨在教授同學基本日語之平假名及片假名字母,打好學習日語基礎。此外,老師還教授寒暄語及簡單句式,好讓同學能嘗試與日本人作基本溝通。
